Why I Joined PERMA FAIR: Fixing What’s Broken in Healthcare

By Angela Ortiz, Administrative Assistant & Project Coordinator

Healthcare in the United States is complicated, expensive, and too often frustrating for the very people it’s meant to serve. I know that firsthand, not just as a professional in the health insurance industry, but as a member myself. I began my career working in health insurance as an Administrative Assistant, supporting leadership, and learning how the system works behind the scenes. Later, I moved into a role at a large insurance company, where I expected better access, clearer answers, and more support. Instead, what I experienced was the opposite.

I was frustrated by how much I had to pay out of pocket for coverage, and even more disappointed by how difficult it was to get meaningful help when I had questions about a claim. The lack of transparency and guidance made me realize how broken the system truly is, even for someone who has worked inside the industry. That experience stayed with me. It made me think: if navigating healthcare is this confusing and costly for employees within the system, how impossible must it feel for everyone else? Those frustrations are part of what ultimately led me to PERMA FAIR.

At PERMA FAIR, I saw something different — a company that is building healthcare the way it should be: fair, transparent, and centered around real people, not profit margins. The mission to lower costs, simplify care, and support members is not just a goal here, it’s the foundation.

I joined PERMA FAIR not only because I wanted to gain experience in a startup environment, but because I wanted to be part of the beginning of something that can truly change healthcare. As the Administrative Assistant and Project Coordinator to our CEO, Bill Green, I work closely alongside him to help bring organization, structure, and operational support to the big vision he is driving forward. My goal is to develop processes, keep our team aligned, and ensure that he can focus on what he does best: selling, strategizing, and thinking boldly about the future.

What excites me most is the impact we have ahead of us. Health insurance costs too much, and the system is far too difficult to navigate. This is a real problem in the United States, and one that we can fix. Being part of PERMA FAIR means being part of the solution for our members, our partners, and the healthcare industry as a whole.

This is more than a job. It’s an opportunity to help build something better from the ground up, and I’m truly proud to be part of it.
